How Does Big Blind Ante Work
For those not familiar with the format, it works as follows: In variants with an ante, instead of each player posting an ante each hand, the player in the Big Blind will post an amount equal to the Big Blind. For example, with blinds at 500-1,000, the player in the Big Blind will post 1,000 for his/her Big Blind, followed by 1,000 for the Ante. There are certain things we would do in the big-blind that we would almost never do in any other position. Even good players will nearly always lose money in the big-blind. Being forced to invest 1bb before even seeing our hole cards is a huge disadvantage, especially when you consider that we will spend much of our BB time playing out of position. The big blind ante is a recent innovation in tournament play. Instead of each individual player placing an ante, the big blind places a single ante for the table (usually equal to a single big blind). This is in addition to posting his big blind.
